Wikipedia goes black as 24 hour long Blackout Commences

The 24 hour long Wikipedia Blackout in protest against the SOPA anti piracy act that is being moved in the U.S House of representatives has commenced. As I type this, the Wikipedia home page looks like this:

The page says:

“Imagine a World

Without Free Knowledge

For over a decade, we have spent millions of hours building the largest encyclopedia in human history. Right now, the U.S. Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open internet. For 24 hours, to raise awareness, we are blacking out Wikipedia.”

The page also gives links to Facebook, Google and Twitter links to pages where users can express their support against the act.

The English language Wikipedia will not be available for the next 24 hours as a mark of protest against the draconian, anti “internet freedom” act that is being proposed in the U.S.

If you are too dependent on Wikipeda however, one workaround to access the site would to be search for your Wikipedia article on Google and click on the “cached” option. It will land you on the required page – albeit it could be slightly outdated page. That said, I assume in this situation the cached page should suffice.

Also to be noted is the fact the mobile version of Wikipedia is still accessible.

Update: You can skip the blacked out page if you hit the ESC key before the Wikipedia page you want to open loads entirely.

Are you against acts like the SOPA and PIPA as well?
