Xiaomi has unveiled the highly anticipated Mi MIX 2S flagship phone through a launch event in Shanghai. Samsung, Sony and Asus have already announced Snapdragon 845 powered smartphones at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 tech trade event that was held at the end of the last month. However, the Mi MIX 2S is the first smartphone from a Chinese smartphone OEM to feature the Snapdragon 845. The other attraction of the Mi MIX 2S is its dual camera setup that is powered by AI.
Design and Display
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S resembles to the Mi MIX 2 from the front. Its dimensions are 150.86 x 74.9 x 8.1mm and it weighs 189 grams. It has a four sided curved ceramic body. The black variant has gold accents for the dual camera module whereas the white model has silver accents for it.
The Chinese manufacturer has slightly cut down on the size of the bottom bezel on the Mi MIX 2S compared to the predecessor model. The selfie camera still lies on the right corner of the lower bezel. The earpiece is positioned on the thin-sized bezel at the top. The backside of the phone features a fingerprint scanner.
The Mi MIX 2S is fitted with a 5.99-inch IPS LCD that produces 18:9 aspect ratio and Full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. It offers an impressive screen-to-body ratio of 90 percent and includes support for DCI-P3 color gamut.
Cameras
The Mi MIX 2S has a dual camera setup located at the top-left corner of the phone. It is equipped with a 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 sensor that has a pixel size of 1.4micron. It is the very same camera sensor that is found on the Asus ZenFone 5Z flagship phone that was announced at MWC 2018. The primary 12-megapixel sensor is accompanied by a 12-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. With AI, the dual rear cameras can detect up to 206 scenes and it also carries support for translate text in real-time. The background of the images shot with Mi MIX 2S dual rear cameras can be customized with 6 kinds of dynamic effects.
Also, the Mi MIX 2S is equipped with slow-motion video shooting in Full HD quality. Multi frame image processing feature available on the Mi MIX 2S can considerably reduce noise to capture clearer images in dim-light conditions. Some of the attractive features of the dual cameras include dual-tone LED flash, dual pixel autofocus, dual-tone LED flash and 4-axis OIS. DxOMark has already benchmarked the dual camera setup of the Mi MIX 2S and it has been awarded with a photo shooting score of 101.
The AI powered 8-megapixel front-facing camera is capable at shooting impressive portrait shots. It also delivers improved facial recognition experience compared to the predecessor model.
Performance and Software
The Snapdragon 845 is the driving force of the Mi MIX 2S. The 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB models of the smartphone feature 6 GB of RAM. The special edition of the Mi MIX 2S is packed with 8 GB of RAM and a native storage of 256 GB. All the models carry support for microSD card slot. The handset is running on Android 8.0 Oreo and the latest version of MIUI 9.5. It also brings along Xiao AI voice assistant that is currently available only in China.
Like the predecessor model, the Mi MIX 2S also includes support for 43 global bands which comprises of 22 LTE bands. The other features available on the Mi MIX 2S include NFC. Lastly, the Mi MIX 2S features Quick Charge 3.0 for its 3,400mAh battery and it is also the first Xiaomi phone to support 7.5W Qi wireless charging.
Pricing and Availability
The Qi wireless charging bed is priced at 99 Yuan (~Rs. 1,025). The 64 GB + 6 GB RAM and 128 GB RAM + 6 GB RAM are respectively priced at 3,299 Yuan (~Rs. 34,185) and 3,599 Yuan (~Rs. 37,291). The model featuring 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage is priced at 3,999 Yuan (~Rs. 41,446). The highest configuration variant comes with a free Qi wireless charging bed. It will be available for buying in China starting from April 3. As of this writing, there is no confirmation on whether it will be made available in India.
