It started out as a low-cost touchscreen device and is now spiralling into a rather vast family that has everything from total touchscreen to a non-touchscreen and touchscreen-QWERTY avatars. Samsung’s Corby might have boosted the company’s handset sales and redefined what people expect from devices in the lower-middle price segment, but it seems to be in danger of spinning out of control. As of now, we have close to half a dozen different Corby handsets and while the ones on the lower end will appeal to the value-for-money crowd, the higher-end affairs, like the Corby Plus and the Corby Pro, are getting into smartphone territory.
Some people would say there’s nothing really wrong with that, but I think that Sammy might just need to rethink its strategy here. A high end phone coming out with a lower cost version (like all the Minis seen nowadays) might appeal to consumers but try the same thing in reverse and the stark fact is that high-end users are unlikely to invest in a brand that is associated with a value-for-money proposition rather than high performance. And that is exactly where the Corby range could stumble – there are already users who are opting for Samsung’s own (more…)

Samsung has announced that it would be releasing its slider eReader this spring. Samsung E6 would be released in partnership with Barns and Noble. The Barns and Noble partnership would give E6 users access to more than a million e-books, e-magazines and e-newspapers.
Barns and Noble already has its own eReader – the Nook in stores. The difference between the two eReader lies in their pricing. While the Nook is priced at $259, Samsung E6 would be retailing at $399. Below is a quick look at the specifications of the Samsung E6 – (more…)

The 3DTV industry is buzzing with activity this year, with Samsung launching its own at the CES in Jan this year. Samsung has already gone into mass production with its 3DTV. Below is a video from Which? which gives us a sneak peek of the compatibility of its new remote with the 3DTV and its effects conforming its range even at wide angles. Also surprisingly it has a feature to convert 2D videos to 3D. Amazing I must say. In the video, being used are the newly launched Samsung’s 3D glasses using the Active Shutter Technology @ $150 (costly though). The Launch date is tentatively around April for now, no official commitment though. (more…)

Learning from the success of the Corby series, Samsung is now introducing a new series fuelled with all sorts of social networks. The new Monte series already has Samsung Monte S5620, and now Samsung’s MWC flicker account has leaked two new handsets from the same series. These are the Monte Bar (GT-C3200) and the Monte Slider (GT-E2550) as shown in the pictures above.
For now, there are no specifications known of the duo. But with MWC just round the corner, we could soon have an official press release of the two. Samsung (in all probability) would also be releasing its Bada OS powered Samsung Wave during MWC (Mobile World Congress, Barcelona).

No I ain’t speculating, but fact remains that both android and iPhone comes from really sophisticated Internet + software companies, I may be wrong but I doubt if Samsung can deliver that level of a smartphone os. The touchwiz UI powered Bada OS IMO would be good support for Samung’s media rich devices. Having handled the Omnia pro recently, I can very well see the need for Samsung to have it’s own software powering it’s taste if UI (the WinMo is horribly modded with the widgets interface).
One thing that has brought tremendous success to Samsung is the iPhone wannabes strategy. They have artfully catered to the sub $200 market with good looking touchscreens. The Corby & Star i.e. These phones aren’t about rich experience in terms of mobile internet or smart apps, but they give what the Rs 10k junta wants – good looks, iPhone style full touchscreen & feeling of a smartphone. If Samsung can pack a better OS (a much more matured OS as I like to call them) in a $200 full touchscreen like Corby, the potential is killer!
But that might not be the real reason Samsung wants the Bada OS. A great motivation behind the Bada OS might well be the apps market. Mobile apps is now raking in billions and Samsung sure wants to monetize this segment with it’s own OS>developers>apps ecosystem. With over 50 million Samsung touch phones by Samsung being out In the market, the opportunity is certainly exciting.
So will Samsung crack the app store model for itself? Probably yes. But will Bada really bring in competition for Android and iPhone? Unlikely!

No, Samsung isn’t launching any social networking site for lovers. Wave is the new name they have given to their first Super AMOLED phone, which is widely speculated to be launched at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, in less then 24 hours from now.

Folks at Engadget came across a teaser on the Samsung Unpacked site that says “on Feb 14, a new mobile from Samsung is born. See it First in Barcelona”. There is a strong speculation that this new mobile may well be Samsung’s first smartphone with its own OS – the Bada OS (“bada” means “ocean” in Korean).
Technically, it’s called S8500 Wave. And one of the surprise features is its support of USB 3.0 (& bluetooth 3.0), which is yet to go mainstream. The Super AMOLED here refers to the 800 X 480 resolution and is claimed to (more…)

By the first looks of it,I thought this was some new nail polish bottle. After taking a closer look at it I realised that this ones got a wired tail and it is a digital music player. Now Samsung has introduced the new TicToc player that does all the functions of an MP3 player with just a single button and an accelerometer. The player has no display and is as sleek as its closest compeditor – the iPod Shuffle.
The device has a smart accelerometer sensor that changes track. A slow shake would line-up a slow song while a vigorous shake would play a fast one. The only key on the player acts as both the power button and the volume control key. Holding the player upside down with the key pressed reduces the volume and vice versa. (more…)

Remember that weird (futuristic) transparent AMOLED laptop that Samsung displayed at CES this year? Now the news on it is that the company is actually planning to launch it within a year.

And not just that, Samsung actually wants to create a separate category of products having the transparent screen and plans to launch several such products next year. Also there are rumors of a transparent navigation device that Samsung plans to mount on the car windshields.
My views on this weird laptop form factor with a transparent display still remain the same : it’s simply has no practical use! I mean, obviously this looks cool but it also allows people around you to see what work you are doing. So that clearly violates your own privacy. And then, there are issues of it’s usability in the direct sunlight. At the max, you can play music, games or do some casual work on it. You surely won’t spend your hard-earned bucks only to play music while you show off the gorgeous transparent screen. Will you?
As for the transparent navigation device that Samsung plans to mount on the car windshields. It makes a lot of sense, given that this technology would aid a situation where we are discussing in-car screens, that would not distract the drivers attention from the road ahead (atleast not completely).

I have probably mentioned it a dozen times that Samsung is missing a smart OS in its touchscreen range (viz Corby, Star) and perhaps BADA OS would fill that gap. We are hearing that the S8200 would be the first BADA OS phone from Samsung and might well be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress later this month. The S8200 is said to be a Snapdragon powered high-end touchscreen, that would feature a 3.7″ AMOLED screen (), 5MP camera, WiFi, GPS, HSPA etc. Hope they also manage to get a more mature OS for the low end touchscreens aswell after the mega BADA OS launch is done with.
In other news it is also confirmed that Samsung GT-S8500 would be the first smartphone to support USB 3.0 & bluetooth 3.0 which has just been cleared by the Bluetooth SIG. Another full touchscreen with a 3.1″ OLED display the S8500 might well be one of the BADA OS releases at MWC. Exciting stuff happening from Samsung, hope they live up to the hype.

Samsung is leaving no stone unturned in the battle of the smartphones, leaving Nokia and others a real uphill task in the touchscreen race. Having sold 40 million touch phones in 2009 alone, Samsung has enough wisdom to know what really sells. Someone hunting for a Rs 8000 – Rs 12000 touchscreen smartphone isn’t a power user and the Samsung Corby / Star range suits them just perfectly. The iPhone wannabes if you can call them (and there isn’t any shame in being one); love the freedom of memory cards, ringtones, bluetooth file transfer, better camera with flash, cheaper price etc. The latest addition to the low end touchscreen from Samsung is the Star Superb (S5560). Bundling WiFi, 5MP camera, full touchscreen and a compact design at a price point of mere Rs 11,000 (<$250) is pretty much a success formula. IMO this one certainly kills the Nokia 5530 and even gives the 5800 a run for its money.
The Star Superb is basically a Corby design with the finishing of a Samsung Star. Confused? (more…)

The much awaited Samsung C3510 has been officially released by Samsung Russia today also referred to as Samsung Genoa in Europe. This is a cheaper and toned down version of Samsung Corby S3650 in features.
Bundled with a 1.3 mp camera and only 30 MB of internal memory (expandable upto 8GB with a MicroSD card) they are calling it the ‘finger friendly one touch mobile‘. CES 2010 has witnessed launch of some cool gadgets and some weird ones as well. Samsung’s Transparent Laptop falls in the latter category. Well, it’s basically a (prototype of) giant 14-inch see-through AMOLED display laptop, which makes Samsung XPERIA Pureness look totally worthless.

Transparency factor is about 40% (when it is off). Resolution is 960 X 540, but the colors look pleasantly vibrant because of (more…)

Samsung has gone official with new netbooks lineup that would be powered by the all new Intel Pine Trail CPU’s. The Atom PineTrail CPU puts the GPU and Memory along with the CPU on the same die, shrinking the no of chips to just two (from the three earlier). Not getting to technical, this in plain language means better efficiency and lower cost.
While Samsung will make us wait for the upcoming CES before revealing exact specifications and pricing details, the four models coming up are N210, N220, N150 and NB30. All of these sport a 10.1″ LED backlit display and resolution upto 1024×768 can be achieved with some software magic. The NB30 is expected to be the high-end version of the low with ruff-n-tuff features like water tight seal and HDD sensor to handle drops.
2010 will surely see a lot of next-gen netbooks, look out for Nvidia’s Ion based netbooks, that promise better performance than the Intel Atom.

It may be getting into headlines more often for its cellphones (especially the never-ending Corby range) but Samsung is busy in other fields too. It recently gave us a glimpse of its latest digital camera – the CL80 and we were not just intrigued – heck, we were downright impressed.
The reason for our jaws doing the dropping act was not just gravity. Or even the specs on the new Sammy clicker. All right, 14 megapixels, 7x optical zoom, 31 mm wide angle lens, 720 dp HD recording and HDMI connectivity are not to be sneezed at, but at the most, they would elicit a raise of the ‘umble eyebrow. What sent ours scurrying into our scalps was the fact that the device comes with a bigger than usual 3.7 inch display. And it ain’t an ordinary display – it is AMOLED. It is a touchscreen. And a capacitive (read “iPhone type”) one at that. With haptic feedback!
And we are not through (more…)

Seems like Samsung has realised that selling 50million touchscreens won’t help in the long run if the OS on the phone is crappy. The recent Samsung phone like the Star series and the Corby series are advertised heavily with integrated FB, Twitter and Orkut. But the reality is that using any of these services or even plain internet on the Corby/Star browser is a PAIN. So here comes the solution from Samsung: Bada OS. Instead of sticking to the known names like Android, Symbian or Windows Mobile; Samsung has decided to walk the tough path like (more…)
