It might be sunny, cloudy, pitch dark at midnight, but the weather will always be just brilliant as long as you are checking it on Google on an Android device or an iPhone. Now, when you want to know the weather and need more than just boring text, all you have to do is go to google.com on your iPhone or Android phone’s browser (we recommend Safari on the iPhone and the default browser on the Android device), enter ‘weather’ in the search box and what you will get is not the small byte of information on local weather, and links as in the past, but a much bigger area, completely with a sun/moon/clouds graphic with the temperature displayed prominently. Just below this is an hourly forecast which you can slide to different times to check weather conditions – the graphic will change accordingly. There is also a forecast for the next few days to round matters off. The regular search results are just below this.
No, it is not actually an app (we hope it will be some day), but it is one of the nicest touches we have seen from Google – simplicity and style at its best. And it does save one from the trouble of downloading all those weather forecasting apps and widgets. Mind you, it does behave strangely – it worked well on our Moto Milestone but showed us the same old Google weather search on our iPhone 3GS and OlivePad running Froyo. If you have a solution or explanation to this, do let us know.
