Google Instant Search released in India

Indian Web surfers rejoice! Google has made its new Instant Search available for Indian users. The new search that literally shows search results even as you type was released a couple of weeks ago. In simple terms, it literally kills the need for you to hit the “search” button as the service keeps trying to guess what you are searching for even as you type and throw up relevant results, more often than not saving you the need to type in your complete query. So if you are searching for Amitabh Bachchan, you will start seeing results about him by the time you have typed “Amita.” We got OnlyGizmos.com right on top of the result list by the time we had typed “Onlyg” (check the screenshot!).

Needless to say, not only does this look pretty spectacular, but actually saves a considerable amount of time. According to Google, “If everyone uses Google Instant globally, we estimate this will save more than 3.5 billion seconds a day.” Doing the magic are some very powerful algorithms which work at an amazing speed behind the scenes to ensure that not only does the search engine attempt to guess that you are typing but also throw up relevant results, customised according to different regions.

It does need a brisk Internet connection to work at its best and currently works with Chrome v5/6, Firefox v3, Safari v5 for Mac and Internet Explorer v8 on computers – a mobile version is in the works – and you need to sign in to Google to make it happen.  Yes, it actually works! Go try it out.
