Sony’s 16.41 Megapixel Sensors for Cameraphones Arrive

If you thought we were almost at the end of the megapixel war when it comes to cellphones, Sony has thrown up a surprise in the form of its latest sensor that can capture images at 16.41 megapixels.

As of now, camera phones with 12 megapixel sensors form the upper range of the cameraphone range. The main contenders for the top camera phones out there are the Nokia N8, Samsung Pixon 12 and the Sony Ericsson Satio – each boasting of a 12 megapixel sensor. Indian player Spice too is in the fray with its S-1200 cameraphone which has a 12 megapixel sensor. But then, we are yet to be convinced about its image quality being comparable to the rest of the members in the 12 megapixel clan. Anyway, with even dedicate digicams not really requiring images that are more than 12 megapixels for normal photography, the question in everyone’s mind is how long will this megapixel war in camera phones last?

Not any time soon, if we are to go by the intentions of Sony who has just revealed a 1/2.8-inch back-illuminated 16.41 megapixel CMOS sensor designed for camera phones.

Sony is planning to sell the sensor to its unnamed clients for $30 each by January 2011. Sony has also revealed how good the sensor is at capturing images. Take a look at the images below to understand what we mean

Along with this 16.41 megapixel sensor, Sony has also introduced a 1/3.2-inch 8 megapixel sensor which is expected to be shipped by April 2011.

Lets hope the camera phones of the future works on improving the actual image quality and not just sex up the megapixel count.
