Nokia might have been having a relatively rough time in the smartphone market (it remains the leader, though), but one thing that really worked in its favour was the Ovi Music Unlimited service. It lets users download an unlimited number of tracks on to their handsets and computers for an entire year after purchasing a “comes with music” handset. Now, considering the excellent collection of music at Ovi Music, this was a terrific deal for all music lovers.
So you can imagine how stunned we were when we started hearing rumours that Nokia has decided to end the “Comes with Music”scheme. While there had been a few rumours in the market, we have had perhaps the most significant statement about it coming from none other than the redoubtable Eldar Murtazin, editor in chief of Mobile-Review.com, who tweeted a few minutes ago: “Nokia Ovi Music Unlimited (Nokia comes with music) is closed. No new devices or subscriptions in 2011. Bye bye.”
We have not heard anything official from Nokia, and while Eldar has had his run-ins with the company in the past, we do not think he would have tweeted something like this without significant evidence. So, is this the end of Comes With Music? We hope not. Watch this space.
