Barely a couple of days within Dell’s launching its Streak tablet in the Indian market at what to us seems to be a stiff price of Rs 34,990, comes a tablet that costs less than a third of it – Rs 8,999 to be exact. This is the Magnum pocket tablet launched by Lakshmi Access Communications Systems(LACS), the Wireless Infomedia Services division of the Multi- Crore Devraj Group of Companies. Although the release we received did not mention which operating system it ran on or details about its processing power, it did say that the tablet came with 10.9 cm or 12.7 cm “Indianised resistive touchscreens,” 2GB of onboard storage (expandable to 16GB using microSD cards) and a mini-USB port that lets you connect the tablet to select televisions and projectors (now, THAT is something).
On the browsing side, the Magnum does not seem to have built in data connectivity, but is capable of pairing with a cellphone over Bluetooth and surfing the Internet over GPRS. It seems to have GPS connectivity (there are references to a “Navigator” and maps) as well as the option to read (dunno about edit) MS Office and PDF files, and an audio and video player that support “90% of all file formats.” We hope to fill in more details once we get a review unit – the company says that it will send us one shortly and we are keeping our fingers crossed.
Still, all these features at a price of Rs 8,999 sounds very promising. We just hope it comes in the market. After all, we are still waiting for the Binatone HomeSurf Android tablet that was announced for a similar price tag a couple of weeks ago but has not even made the stores yet.
