iPhone 5 Initial Benchmarks Reveal A6 Chip Faster Than Galaxy S III, iPad 3

With the initial frenzy over the launch of the iPhone 5 over, people are now interested in learning more about the spruced up hardware inside the device. Unlike Android players who clearly announce the processor details and the number of cores that go inside their phones, Apple has been traditionally very shy in revealing the same. The company’s motto has been to concentrate more on the fluidness of its UI rather than the overall hardware specs.

That said, there is no denying the fact that over the years, Apple’s much used A-x series of processors have been consistently listed amongst the fastest mobile processors out there. Has that trend continued with its new A6 processor? Looks like that is the case again if we are to believe initial reports coming in.

Folks from over at Geekbench seems to have gotten hold of an iPhone 5 and has subjected it to a benchmarking test. The tests revealed that this new A6 processor trounces most of the competition out there – the all powerful Samsung Galaxy S III and Apple’s own iPad 3 included! The dual core A6 processor under the hood of the iPhone 5 runs at “just”  1.02 Ghz. Obviously, the performance here is not related to the overall clock speed or the number of cores any longer with many competing products boasting of faster clock speeds and greater number of cores.

Here are the results of the tests. The iPhone 5’s A6 chip managed to score a very healthy 1601 points in the benchmark test. See how this score compares to older Apple devices and the iPad 3. The previous generation iPhone, the 4S “only” manages to score 630 points while the iPad 3 romps home with 790 points making it clear that the A6 is the current performance king.

Now comparing it to the current line up of Android handsets also shows that the A6 manages to edge out the Galaxy S III as well as the HTC One X by a decent margin. Here are the results of the tests.

All said, let us remind you that these are results of an initial benchmarking test. More juicy bits regarding the processor and the new Graphics chip inside the iPhone 5 would only be revealed in the days to come.
