Now this one’s really interesting. Micromax Mobiles, which over the past few years had managed to turn quite a few heads with their range of low cost Android handsets like the A60 and the A70 , are at it again. The company is reportedly working on a new Android powered handset that might just turn out to be revolutionary.
We are talking about the possibility of them coming up with an Android handset that would pack in a dual core processor and run the latest version of Android – all for a price well under the psychological Rs. 20,000 mark. The news was leaked by sources close to friends over at The Mobile Indian.
As of now, what we know about the handset is that it would get a 3.8 inch (or maybe even a 4 inch one) display. The number crunching bit would be handled by an Nvidia Tegra 2 T20 chip which would be augmented with 512 MB of RAM. Like we said, it will in most likelihood run Android 2.3 Gingerbread making it the first device from Micromax to do so.
Another interesting bit to the story is the fact that the device would sport some sort of gesture control UI that will make use of a front VGA camera. Talking about the camera, the A85, as the phone might be christened is likely to get a 5 megapixel auto focus camera which for a sub 20k handset is decent. It will also double up as your HD (720p) video recorder when the need arises. The A85 will get 8 GB of onboard memory which can of course be expanded to 32 GB more when you add a micro SD card to the provided slot.
Now, we think it would be a great idea to bring in a low cost handset with “un” low cost features. But it has been usually observed that the overall quality levels on handsets like these tend to be a notch below your expectations. If Micromax manages to offer consumers great quality at these prices – this phone might just prove to be revolutionary – and not to mention – will end up giving sleepless nights to many of the (formidable) competitors the company would have to battle in this space.
There is no word though as to how soon Micromax plans to bring this one to the markets.
Update: As it turns out, AndroidOS.in has managed to spot that this handset is nothing but a re-branded K Touch W700, a Chinese (but obviously!) handset that made its debut back in April 2011.
