Micromax joins the Android race with Rs 8,000 Andro A60, also talks of 7-inch tablet

We were not there (well, there are only so many places we can be at the same time), but the news is trickling out that Micromax has unveiled its first Android phone at a bloggers’ meet in Delhi some hours ago. Called the Andro A60, the phone has a 2.8 inch resistive touchscreen of 240 x 320 resolution, a 3.15 megapixel camera, 150 MB internal memory (expandable to 32 GB using a memory card), has support for Wi-Fi and 3G, is likely to have two SIMs (if it does, it will be the first Android device in the country to be dual-SIM), and runs on Android 2.1, with an outside chance of getting updated to Froyo in 2011. And in best Micromax tradition, it fights on price – all indications are that the phone will cost in the vicinity of Rs 8,000!

The company also talked of launching a phone with a 3.5 inch capacitive touchscreen running Android 2.2 in the coming days, as well as a seven inch tablet, neither of which will cost a bomb. Are we impressed? Well, honestly, not too much by the A60, considering that you can get a Samsung Galaxy 5 for around Rs 8,900 in the market, with a capacitive screen and much better looks (frankly, we think the A60 does not look too good in the pictures we have seen so far – we do hope the product itself will change our minds). But the tablet and Froyo phones with a larger screen are intriguing. We are waiting. And watching.
