Shocking! Isn’t it? But this rumor by This is my next might just be true as Andy Lees said that Redmond would have a single ecosystem for PC, tablet, smartphones and even TV during Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference.
Lees also pointed out that it has now become possible to have full PC computing power on other form factors, citing the example of Windows on ARM demo motherboards being smaller than mobile phones. In Lees’ words “coherence and consistency” is what Microsoft is looking to provide for all types of devices. And as per speculations Microsoft is not only looking to synchronize Windows for PC and Windows smartphones but also the Xbox operating system.
And they plan to do this by the next four years i.e roughly 2015, which gets consolidated even further by the fact that duration coincides with the end of the Xbox’s 10 year life cycle, as well as, Windows 8?s estimated 3 year run. This essentially opens the door for Microsoft’s next OS which would run on the PC, tablet, phone and the Xbox. And if ‘This is my next’ is to believed, Ballmer is seriously considering re branding this future OS by dropping the “Windows” label.
This certainly won’t be easy considering the fact that Windows OS is attached with a host of manufacturer, and it won’t be easy to align all of them towards their goal of one integrated OS for all the devices. But it feels exciting to know that at least Microsoft is thinking of the future and moving over its patenting and licensing strategy that it seems to follow these days.
