Nokia is on a patent trolling spree, especially since it’s witnessing a drastic drop in its shares and sales.
The latest we’re hearing that Nokia has added an additional three patents to the already existing seven patents it had filed against RIM in the Munich Regional Court in May.
The additional three patents in question here deal with “storing and transferring multimedia tags”, “updating the software of a mobile terminal using the air interface”, and “transferring resource information.” Nokia has in fact used the first of the three to file an additional patent against HTC in Mannheim as well.
The earlier seven patent complaints by Nokia has been filed in different courts which includes two in Dusseldorf, two in Mannheim and three in Munich.
Nokia has claimed that it has invested more than 45 million Euros in building the patent portfolio in the course of the last two decades with around 10,000 patent families.
Nokia has already filed patent suits against firms like HTC, RIM and ViewSonic in courts of Germany as well as with the US International Trade Commission.
As per Florian Mueller of Foss Patents, Nokia pretty much holds the upper hands in the patent cases against RIM is more likely to get a favorable result, even if RIM countersues.
The patent trolling is an efficient way of generating revenues and keeping the firm afloat till it manages to turn the tide with the current crop of Windows Phone based smartphones.
