Nokia had announced at the launch of the N8 (India) that it would be the only Symbian ^3 handset launched in India this year. Almost a fortnight after that, it seems that they might have been just a bit inaccurate. We cannot confirm this officially, but at least three major cellphones dealers (under condition of anonymity) have told us that they are expecting the Nokia C7 to be available in the country for a price of around Rs. 19,000 and one of them has even started taking advance orders for it. Evidently, the move comes in the face of “not particularly good” N8 sales in the country and pressure from dealers who say that consumers are asking for the device. The C7 incidentally is expected to sell like hot cakes as it comes in a much sleeker frame than the N8 and offers most of its features, including USB on the go, the 3.5 inch AMOLED touch screen and Symbian ^3. Of course, it has only an 8 MP camera with a dual LED flash, as compared to the 12 MP monster and Xenon flash on the N8, and has only 8GB on board memory, as compared to 16GB on the N8. On the flip side, it is arguably the most gorgeous Nokia phone we have seen for a while (we messed with a prototype) with its stainless steel and glass combo!
We hasten to stress that this is just a rumor with no official substantiation, but if true, then the C7 could be the runaway hit that Nokia has been waiting for, as it would be utterly unchallenged in that price segment.
Update: This was spot on. Nokia today made the price announcement to all its dealers across India. Best price is indeed Rs. 19000 and stock should start flowing in a few days.
