Recently Nokia made a clarification that their new flagship Windows Phone 7 device i.e. the Nokia Lumia 900 will boast of an AMOLED screen which will be non PenTile.
I could see that there are scores of people who failed to understand what difference would that make. And hence I decided to write this piece in order to explain the subtle difference between the two.
We all know how good the blacks are on the Clear Black AMOLED screens on Nokia devices. The Nokia Lumia 800 boasts of a similar display but the tech experts in the industry were slightly critical about it due to the usage of a slightly cheaper PenTile Matrix Display.
The PenTile display isn’t much different from the AMOLED and the performance fairly remains the same except for the fact that when it comes to text (especially thin ones) they appear to be slightly blurred or faded on the edges. Sometimes the background of the screen can also appear to be very grainy and as a result it might affect your visual experience with the display.
Below is an image with Nokia Lumia 800’s PenTile display, iPhone 4’s Retina display and lastly HTC Titan’s SLCD display. This image shared by Engadget clearly displays the disparity between the three.
We hope that this answers your question. You can read more about the AMOLED screens here.
