It has been a busy couple of days for the world’s biggest smartphone manufacturer. On the device side, we have finally got to see the first official unboxing of the company’s flagship multimedia device, the N8 , but even that paled into insignificance at the news that Nokia had its first non-Finn CEO, former Microsoft man, Stephen Elop. Elop, best known for his work on the MS Office suite front, takes over from the increasingly embattled Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo from September 21 onwards, even as Nokia attempts to regain lost ground in the cellphone market. The company remains the leader even today, selling more cellphones than any other brand in the world, but has seen its market share dipping in the wake of new devices and platforms from the likes of Apple, RIM and Google. Of course, there are some who wonder if getting a Microsoft person is really what the company needs, given the fact that the big M itself has found itself getting increasingly sidelined in the smartphone business, but we guess the Finnish giant knows exactly what it is doing.
“”The time is right to accelerate the company’s renewal; to bring in new executive leadership with different skills and strengths in order to drive company success,” said Jorma Ollila, Chairman of the Nokia Board of Directors, and if that does not signal some changes in the works, nothing will. Meanwhile, feast your eyes on the official and interactive N8 unboxing video. We have to admit that the unboxing videos are snazzy with some interactive elements built in (you can choose which type of model you want to see taken out of the box and which feature you need to see) but well, they would be, as they are, after all, official. We will get to know more once we actually spend some time with the handset. In the meantime, click here to check out the videos.
