If you are one of those emotional Samsung users who are still holding on to their Samsung Galaxy S II’s in-spite of the fact that the once most powerful flagship finds itself humbled amongst the latest crop of “powerful” handsets, fear not! Samsung has just lengthened the shelf life of the Galaxy S II by announcing that the device would indeed be getting an official update to Android 4.1 JellyBean – early next month.
The roll out will commence from Singapore after which users elsewhere would receive the official update. The update is quite large and for the same reason, you wouldn’t be able to do it over the air. So make sure you have your data cable and KIES updated and ready to go. Also to be noted is the fact that post the update you will only be left with 12 GB of internal memory for applications.
Samsung for some reason seems to be very secretive about this impending update. The company had officially acknowledged that this update is indeed coming in February and posted the same information on their website. However, for reasons best known to them, the announcement was “pulled back” by them a few hours later. However, eagle eyed folks from over at SamMobile did manage to get a screengrab prior to the pulling. So now we know what Samsung had planned.
The Samsung Galaxy S II was launched back in April 2011 and has been a huge success. Samsung had also recently announced that its “Galaxy S” series of smartphones have crossed cumulative sales of 100 million units – of which around 40 million consisted of the Galaxy S II alone.
If you are the impatient kind and is in a hurry to see how Android 4.1 functions on the Galaxy S II, you can try flashing your phone with an unofficial, leaked ROM. More on that bit here. The instructins by the way, are in Korean. So, beware.
