No matter what the Touchscreen technology present in your phone. Be it SLCD, AMOLED, S-AMOLED, S-AMOLED+ (Samsung Galaxy S2), they all have been smudge-magnets. No matter how you use the phones, they are prone to dirty & ugly smears of sweat & finger-grease.
However, Nokia has taken it upon them to rid, the otherwise awesome phones, of this big drawback. It recently demoed at Nokia World in London, what is called a Super Hydrophobic Nano-coating on a Nokia 700. Developed in MIT University of Cambridge, this coating, which apparently does not affect clarity, is highly effective in either eliminating the smudges altogether or at least makes it very easy to get rid of them. An added advantage is that the coating will make the phones more water resistant as moisture is repelled.
Please do not confuse this with Apple’s recent patent for “Physical Vapor Desposition” (PVD), which involves deposition of thin films of vaporized material onto the surface. In Apple’s case, the coating is applied in liquid form inside of a bottle that is pressurized with inert gas, so that it can be sprayed onto the surface. A little farfetched approach, don’t you think?
It’s interesting to see how Nokia, which has been struggling to maintain its market share off late is working on interesting developments and innovations. Well these innovations doesn’t guarantee Nokia back their lost market but they are sure steps in the right direction. With a slew of WP7 handsets about to be launched in the coming weeks, Nokia certainly has a better chance at defending their market share if not gain any to say the least.
