Sonim has secured the title of World toughest phone (Guinness record) for its model ‘XP3300 Force.’ Made for people with the most testing jobs, Sonim applies its learnings from over half million workers from varied industries. The GSM enabled XP3300 features a 2MP camera with LED flash, Java enabled OS (supports apps like Opera Mini), GPS, noise cancellation and a 23mm speaker. The phone has a 3.5mm audio out and a 1750 mAh battery that gives over 20 hours of talk time.
The device is no slim cookie, weighing 185 gms and a thickness of 25 mm, but then it isn’t designed for teenagers either. The Sonim XP3300 Force appeals to workers facing tough industrial / construction conditions and is priced at USD 525. While comparing with Touch Screen smartphones for a buying decision isn’t fair, when contesting with the Samsung Xcover or Motorola Defy+, the Sonim XP3300 features a much tougher design and earns a IP-68 rating against the IP-67 on the other two. While all these three devices have total dust ingress protection given a IP-6x rating, the IP-68 on the Sonim XP3300 Force makes it even tougher for under water survival (up to 2 mts for 1 hour.)
Sonim Xp3300 Force also secures a MIL SPEC-810G rating (United States Military Standard), which tests the product for resistance against pressure & temperature to fungus & humidity. It may be noted that there is no certified organization giving MIL ratings and thus the claims can be put to test. Given that Sonim contested for Guinness word record for the worlds toughest phone and won it, we would take their claims seriously.
Here is a video of Sonim XP3300 Force’s Guinness record attempt. The phone was dropped from a height of 25 meters and it was fully functional after the fall, thus surviving the impact on concrete.
