June 6 2011 will be remembered for being the day that witnessed two major tech events and announcements. On one end was Apple’s WWDC which garnered most of the attention. On the other hand was Sony’s E3 conference which was also the occasion for significant announcements by Sony. One such announcement was pertaining to the PSP sales figures.
Ever since its introduction back in 2004 at that years E3 Conference as a rival to Nintendo’s GameBoy, the PSP has gone on to sell a staggering 70 million units, Sony revealed at the E3 yesterday. While the PSP is still second to its arch rival the Nintendo GameBoy versions which have sold over 200 million units around the globe, there is no doubt that the product has been a runaway success.
The PSP has seen four iterations until now. The PSP 1000 that debuted back in 2004 was followed by the PSP 2000, PSP 3000 and finally the PSP GO which saw its debut in 2009. The latest edition of the PSP is the just announced Vita which we would be talking about in detail later. Sony also revealed that its UMD library hosts over3,200 titles worldwide even though Sony retired its UMD platform back in 2009 with the PSP Go. This is of course apart from the 2180 downloadable titles available on the PS network.
Anyway, with the Vita launch just around the corner it is clear that Sony has no plans to retire the PSP any time soon. It remains to be seen if the Vita manages to create an impact on the handhelds market, The PSP Go as you might be aware wasn’t a runaway success and is currently only on sale in the US and has retired from other countries owing to poor patronage
