In a move to make the Playstation 3 consoles more affordable and appealing to the masses, Sony Corporation has imposed a price cut on the PS3 amounting to $50 in the North American markets. Similar cuts would also be implemented across leading markets across the globe, the Wall Street Journal reports.. As of now, in the US, the move would reduce the price of the 160 GB version of the PS3 to $249 from $300. Similarly, the price of the 320 GB version has come down to $299.
This puts the base version of the PS3 well in line with the $200 price tag of the baseline Xbox 360. The latter along with Kinect costs $300.
In Europe though, things don’t look too rosy. There, even with the cuts the price of the top of the line version has dropped to just €249. This when translated to US dollars amounts to $359 – which I tell you, is ridiculously expensive. Also, if you live in Europe, this will make you mighty angry at Sony.
With Sony mired in deep trouble (thanks to the recent string of attacks) and with Microsoft breathing down its neck by managing to beat the sales of the PS3 for seven consecutive months with its Xbox 360, these cuts would not have come at a better time.
Now we wonder if Microsoft would choose to respond in kind and announce price cuts of its own for the Xbox 360. You know how these gaming companies are, don’t you?
Anyway, convenient for us gamers!
