Symbian Foundation is shattering faster than we anticipated. The entity announced that all Symbian Foundations websites and platform source code will be taken down offline after Dec 17. That’s just sad. Earlier this month Nokia announced to take over the Symbian Platform development while the Symbian Foundation would turn into a ‘licensing software and intellectual property’ breeding entity.
All those who want to download the Symbian^2, Symbian^3 and Symbian^4 platform development kits, then you should do it right before Dec 17. Symbian Foundation will be taking down following websites:
So if you wish to read about anything Symbian on aforementioned site, you’ll have to use the cached versions of these websites. But that too I wonder would be of much use. You can request the source code, SDKs, bug databases, reference documentations and ideas might be available on a DVD or USB Drive. Just like one can request for GNU/Linux based distributions. Contributions made to the Symbian Wiki, Forum and Bug databases would be available on request after Jan 31, 2011. Not only that, even Symbian Foundation’s Twitter and Facebook account might be discontinued!
What’s in this for you? Well you’ll certainly see Symbian ^3 handsets – Nokia N8, E7, C6-01 and C7 will continue hitting the market. Only thing is that support for any issues related to these handsets and firmware updates might take more than a month to roll out. Till then, hold on tight. Nokia has promised to take over the Symbian Development and I believe the developers wouldn’t let this transition to break their momentum. Now it’s all Nokia with Symbian in its hand for the competition against Google Android devices and Apple iOS devices.
