Windows Mobile Laden Toshiba TG01 Hacked To Run Android

Toshiba’s TG01, when released back in 2009 was one of the most advanced phones in terms of hardware. It boasted of a huge 4.1 inch display and came with a 1Ghz Snapdragon processor. In fact, this was the first handheld device ever to come with the Snapdragon. However, the device, like HTC’s HD2 had to fade in to oblivion because of one thing – the OS. While it would remain debatable if putting these advanced phones with Windows Mobile was a very good idea, there is no denying the fact that had it been a more contemporary OS that were used on these phones, they would have made a much deeper impact.

Anyway, that is not the bone of our contention today. The modding community over at XDA Developers who have in the past done amazing things with your unexciting WinMo handsets are at it again. So, what we have here is a TG01 from last year taken apart and carved off its Windows Mobileness and filled to the brim with a fresh dose of awesome Androidness.

The test build of Android working on the device cannot do one crucial thing as of now – make calls. But then, if you are the impatient kind, this can be your backup tablet that looks like a phone. Head over to the XDA Forums for the detailed jargon filled installation procedure.

Be warned. You’re doing this to your TG01 under no compulsion, at your own risk.

  • If the HTC HD2 and the Toshiba TG01 could be commercially released running Android 2.2, what devices they would be!

  • err, now you know why we don’t hear of Toshiba in cellphones anymore. They made the right things with the wrong software… and may be pretty soon we might say the same for a few more big cos
