March 19th, 2010

Finally there is some official word on when the iPhone 3GS launching in India. Reuters reports that Airtel has confirmed a deal with Apple Inc to sell the iPhone 3GS in India. Delayed for several months now, the 3GS was expected launch last year in August, however given the green signal by Airtel now, we await the pricing details and availability.

While iPad is launching in two weeks, we are still waiting for the 3GS. Would you buy the 3GS or skip it in favor of the iPhone 4G?

iPhone 3GS launching in India tomorrow? Is it too late?

March 13th, 2010

The wait for iPhone 3GSs official unveiling in India has been way too long and event the most die hard Apple fans that I know have given up and purchased a 3GS from the grey market already. However we now hear (or rather our friends over at Fonearena :) ) that the iPhone 3GS would be launched by Apple in India tomorrow i.e. 15th March 2010 with 4 operators. To my surprise Airtel has been dropped off according to this rumor. Last year we had seen Vodafone actually pushed iPhone aside and promoted Blackberry, but then given the market size you never know if Airtel dumped iPhone or its Apple taking the call! This time around Vodafone, Reliance, Aircel and Bharti would carry the phone officially in India (remember its still a rumor).

The issue now isn’t what price Apple would launch the iPhone 3GS for or if Bharti would offer 3G plans for the same or not – the iPhone 4G expected in June motivates people to wait a little more (you can’t blame them for their patience, Apple!). Just yesterday (before I heard this rumor) I happened to discuss with a friend about the iPhone 4G and he immediately shelved his 3GS plans :P . Does Apple really expect to sell 3GS in India with the iPhone 4th generation expected to be out (atleast in US) by June end?

Thx Varun

iPhone all set to overtake Blackberry in 2011

March 9th, 2010

Blackberry remains the highest selling smartphone in the US, thanks to the plethora of business handsets it has to offer. One company that is fast catching up (and currently in no 2 position) is the Apple iPhone. Analyst prediction says that the iPhone would overtake Blackberry in sales sometime in 2011.

RIM’s touchscreen attempt with the Blackberry has failed to matchup and failed to counter the touch hype that iPhone has created. Meantime the iPhone 3GS has went on to be the best selling iPhone ever with Apple unable to go ahead with its global roll out as scheduled due to stock issues. Apple is expected to nab a 11% market share where as RIM Blackberry is seen at 8% in 2011. While a lot (more…)

Apple lawsuit targets Android, Google backs HTC

March 3rd, 2010

There were multiple rumors that a strong reason (or perhaps the only) for Google not integrating multi-touch (pinch to zoom that is) in the US release of Android phones (until now) was a lawsuit threat from Apple. Apple holds patents related to multitouch technology and this happens to be one of the 20 patents that Apple has shortlisted while suing HTC yesterday. Anyone going through the Apple suit against HTC gets it clear that Apple has targeted the Android OS more than HTC, however Google is not officially named in the lawsuit.

Google has not shied away from giving a statement in favour of HTC and this making it clear that they are up for a fight. “We are not a party to this lawsuit. However, we stand behind our Android operating system and the partners who have helped us to develop it,”- Google

HTC has also given a statement stressing (more…)

Smartphone wars: Apple sues HTC over patents

March 2nd, 2010

Apple isn’t content with just counter-suing Nokia over patents, Cupertino has actually gone ahead and filed a suit against HTC for infringing 20 of its patents. While nothing is very clear as of now and just as the Nokia vs Apple battle seems long drawn with ITC and multiple suits coming in picture, we can expect similar action between Apple and HTC in coming weeks / months.

All Apple discloses officially is that the patent infringement is related to the “iPhone’s user interface, underlying architecture and hardware.” Here is the official release: (more…)

DRM Free Nokia Music to become Ovi Music

March 2nd, 2010

After the impressive show put up by Ovi Maps Nokia is trying to rake in some numbers by implementing the success formula with their Nokia Music store. DRM free music stores was something that Apple was pitching for since a long time. And its not very long ago that Apple’s iTunes store also went DRM free (in Jan to be precise). After that it becomes an obligation really for others to follow suit.

Not only is the Nokia Music store is going DRM free but they are integrating it within the Ovi brand. Yes now Nokia Music will be called Ovi Music. Nokia might well want to add mac compatibility to the mix aswell, but for now we have good enough news. One thing is for sure, no matter who wins the battle, the music lovers will only hear the beats.

Microsoft considers Mac OS support Windows Phone 7

March 1st, 2010

When Apple launched iPhone back in 2007, it certainly offered support for Windows based systems. Reason being simple that millions of Windows OS based users existed compared to the Mac OS X users. Now, Microsoft introduced Windows Phone 7 series at the Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona, Spain. Aaron Woodman, Director of Mobile Communication Business for Microsoft, told that Windows Phone 7 series “may be” supporting Mac OS X when asked about it at The Engadget Show.

As per Woodman’s response, the Mac OS support wasn’t entirely snubbed off from Windows Phone 7 series. There is a possibility that Microsoft may bring it when mobile OS goes public by end of year. To discuss that matter, the company has been holding “internal meetings”.

Apparently, the concern here might be that Windows Phone 7 series now has the (more…)

iPhone unlikely to get FLASH support ever?

February 19th, 2010

Ever since the original iPhone in 2007 landed without flash support the rumors of Adobe Flash coming to the iPhone in a future release are regular. Adobe even made its desire to be compatible with the Jesus phone public, but it seem that they have failed to please Apple. Given the remarks that Steve Jobs is said to be making about Adobe Flash these days, it seems unlikely that Apple would ever house this technology.

According to rumors Steve Jobs is advising media outlets (whom he is visiting for iPad content tieups) to give up Adobe Flash and adopt alternative technologies like H.264 video, javascript etc on their websites. Apparently Adobe Flash has been buggy on Mac and Jobs considers it a CPU hog. The issue of security holes in Flash also seems to be an issue with Apple.

We were really hoping that the iPhone OS 4.0 would bring in some solution to render Flash sites on the iPad / iPhone / iPod touch; but it seems Steve Jobs is clear on his view – “we (Apple) don’t spend a lot of energy on old technology.”

Map Wars! The Mobile GPS evolution

February 16th, 2010

GPS on phone is now something very common and just one of the things the smartphone boom has brought to us. As much as these mobiles threat the digital camera market, portable GPS navigation devices have now become one of the endangered species. Till recently software and hardware for GPS navigation systems was a separate business, but over the last few months the dynamics of this market has changed. Google made its big announcement by throwing in its free navigation software on the android, engadget pointed out the sharp fall TomTom and Garmin took.

The google app wasn’t really a killer though it had its own charm and goodness. But the requirement of a continuous Internet connection (atleast in the current beta form) sinks it. Add to that only US support for now. We know that Google maps come together from as many as 6 teams coming together and they would certainly do better things in time to come, but what has really acted as a catalyst to the entire situation is the entry of Ovi maps to the scene. ContactFlow : Snapshot browsing contact application for iPhone

February 8th, 2010

ContactFlow may be new for App Store but was available previously for jailbreaked iPhones. The application allows iPhone users to browse through their contacts in a cover flow style. Its similar to browsing albums on an iPod.

While flipping through the contacts, the user needs to tap on a particular contact to flip the picture for calling options. The options involve calling, SMS and e-mail. The application is a standalone app and doesn’t integrate with the inbuilt contact application on iPhone. Which means, it would have to be used instead of using the built-in contact app.

The good thing is it would compel you to take photos of most of your contacts. I know its time consuming, but it would leave you with a lively contact book to browse through whenever you use your iPhone for calling/SMS/e-mail. The application is available on iTunes for $1.99. [iTunes Link]

Did Apple redefine netbooks?

January 28th, 2010

Steve Jobs started his keynote yesterday with the question if there is a space between the smartphone and notebooks. He then went on to saw that Apple’s answer to the netbook which is low powered and inefficient is the iPad. And IMO to an extent it really is. So after all the iPad bashing thats going around, here is a little ray of hope.

The Apple iPad, nothing magical?

January 27th, 2010

Steve Jobs just unveiled the iPad on stage and much as expected its runs the iPhons OS 4.0 (guessing) and the design of the tablet though is to my surprise just a oversized iPhone itself. While I hear people going WOW about this, frankly there is nothing really magical about the Apple tablet. No groundbreaking hardware and something like the Lenovo Hybrid was better innovation IMO.

And the problem of carrying a tablet shaped device and typing on it on the go still remains. A 5″ iPhone (or a 4.3″ atleast) would have pleased me much more. Though we are still hearing more from Steve’s keynote, lets see
