Expected to come in first half of 2009, this is a 3.5″ Touchscreen with a QWERTY - Looks like a addition to the communicator series. More details as it comes…
From the image we can make out some obvious things, the display is a slide up and rolls over the Qwerty. Also the 5 way navigational joystick is on the left now. The front looks is much like the Sony Ericsson Xperia.

E63 is very similar to the Nokia E71 with not much difference between them. Both handsets run on Symbian OS 9.2 S60 version 3.2, and are almost identical in shape/design. However the E63 would come significantly cheaper to the E71. Somehow this gives me a feeling that its price competition that Nokia wants to bring in. With the domiance of Blackberries in QWERTY’s and also the rising popularity of the iPhone and Windows Mobiles, Nokia needs to enter this segment with multiple option. Nokia has always relied on the numbers game. It rests on its worldwide depth to maintain its dominance in the cellphone industry. In developing nations like India, it has over a dozen models priced below Rs 8000. Hitting the nail right on the head!

Nokia today announced the 5800 touchscreen in India along with their music service Ovi. The much awaited touchscreen from Nokia comes as a competition to the iPhone. The pricing is what excited us the most; Rs 21839 only! While the iPhone is backed by the popular iTunes and the Appstore; Nokia still banks majorly on the Symbian OS and mass market approach.
Ovi is the name for Nokia’s “umbrella concept” Internet services. Centered on ovi.com, it will market as “personal dashboard” where users can share photos with friends, buy music and access third-party services like Yahoo’s Flickr photo site.

Cheap unbranded Chinese handsets are a big hit in India. In a highly competitive mobile market with razor thin margins; most small retailers have either stopped or significantly reduced trading in branded handsets in favor of these Imported ones (also check ebay). These Chinese handset designers are clever and understand their target market very well; Firstly they work on the quantity principle instead of quality and secondly they are priced less than half the Nokia’s and SE’s! Also not to forget some of them copying popular Nokia designs/tunes and also offering WM logos on bootup.

The much rumored and leaked plastic body E71 aka Nokia E63 is now official. E63 offers 3G but no GPS or HSDPA. Available in two colors ruby red and ultramarine blue; I might trade in my E61i for this one!
Whilst appealing to a new group of consumers with a design that feels great in the hand and has two new colors, the Nokia E63 is still very much a member of the Eseries family. Petersen continues, “People use Eseries to access their corporate mail, review their calendar and work in their business network, so the Nokia E63 still includes Wi-Fi connectivity, easy access to Mail for Exchange and dedicated key access to contacts, calendar and email.”
The Nokia E63 also includes Files on Ovi, a service where people can get remote access to their PC files even when their computer is offline. Anyone buying the handset will have access to 1GB of online file storage for free.

While the Nokia E71 is not too expensively priced (@ Rs 20000 in India); a cheaper version E63 has leaked out during a Symbian Software Show. The E63 is similar in design but features a plastic body instead of the metal used in E71, and runs on Symbian v9.2 OS with S60 v3.1 UI.

Though I haven’t had the opportunity to hold the E71 for too long, the few minutes that I had with is enough for a short review. I am currently using a E61i (and my next upgrade most likely is E71) and I have used the Treo 650 and the E62 for a long time. So whats so common in all these? Well, the QWERTY keyboard! Ask any Blackberry user what he loves in his cell, and he would undoubtedly tell you that the pleasure of typing on the QWERTY is addictive, and add to that a fast and responsive OS and you would have a winner. The E71 is very handy and probably much more sleek than its predessors
The navigation joystick that we originally has in E62 was replaced with the D-Pad in E61i and is still good enough with excellent performance in the E71. Its crisp and big enough for my thumb. E71 packs in a lot of features: AGPS, 120MB internal memory + MicroSD slot, 3.2MP camera with Flash!, WiFi, Bluetooth with AD2P, Adobe Flash support (lets you surf YouTube and other flash content).

Dealers are selling the device claiming that all E90 features are here and its half the size. Can’t blame them for that can we? The device sure is sleek. E71 has a 1500mAh Bp-4L battery which is the same that was used in E61i, but is strong enough to handle the GPS and WiFi.
One thing that I miss on the Symbian based Nokia devices, the speed and swift OS like the Palm OS (the one I experienced in Treo 650). The messaging app in E62 and E61i gets slow as soon as you cross some 1200 messages in your Inbox. Although I couldn’t test the E71 with that much data, but with a faster processor and three times more RAM am hoping it would be better!

Tech2 Reports that the Nokia Tube can be seen in action in the Batman Movie The Dark Knight! Tube is a Touch concept that Nokia is working on. It is expected to run a Symbian Touch UI. Though we are yet to see a great TouchScreen from Nokia, we keep living on hopes… (
see the Tube demo video)
Update: Now that we have seen the movie, we have some more on the Nokia Tube.
If you plan to watch the movie, your would be able to see the tube very closely. Its smaller than the iPhone 1st gen and looks much more handy. We believe the interface would have been CG (computer generated) and not real. But the phone has a iPhone (or Windows Mobile) style sleep button the top right. Tempting isn’t it?
