Show us the Xperia X10, Sony Ericsson!

March 11th, 2010

As this is Oscar week, we will just start this post with an instance from Jerry Maguire in which football star Rod Tidwell tells his agent Jerry Maguireto shut up and “show him the money!” Well, we can understand how he felt after hearing Sony Ericsson make YET another  comment about the Xperia X10. We first heard of the Android-driven device in early November when we were told it would be available in Q1 2010. At the recent MWC in Barcelona, we were shown Mini and Mini Pro versions of the device and told it would be coming a bit later.

And NOW we have a Sony Ericsson spokesperson telling CNET that it could come in the second half of the year with a new version of Android. Honestly, we were very impressed by the specs of the X10 (a 8.1 MP shooter, 4.0 inch touchscreen, and every connectivity option in town) but the inordinate delay in its arrival is really making us wonder if like the original Xperia, it would be actually outdated by the time it arrived. It must be one of the few smartphones in cellphone history to have three different avatars, none of which happen to be in the market.

So allow us to paraphrase Rod Tidwell and say, “Enough talk, Sony E. Show us the X10 in the market. Please!”

Sony Ericsson relaeses new firmware for Satio, still not on sale. Aino on shelves

December 3rd, 2009

sony_ericsson_aino_satio

The high-end Sony Ericsson Satio has been through some serious software bug which caused it to shut-down randomly. The software bug issue caused a lot of British cellphone retailers, including Carphone Warehouse,  to stop selling the 12MP symbian powered phone.

While SE did deny that the software bug was a serious issue, they did accept that it cannot be fixed over-the-air. But, SE somehow managed to release the new firmware which they claim has fixed the bug. The new firmware update has been released only for some limited regions, making the situation even worse. Even after loosing a large chunk of sale during the holiday season, SE has still not been able to bring the phone back to shelves.

The buzz over the internet surely says that the once who have updated the firmware are now satisfied. The new firmware not only fixed the power-down bug but also speeded up the phone. Also, there were news that the Aino has been pulled out from sales due to a touchscreen issue. SE and Carphone Warehouse have confirmed that there are no issues with Aino and the phone was never pulled off the shelves. The touchscreen issue was a media rumour.

Overall, it looks like SE is having some tough time to come back to its original glory. Satio software bug and Aino touchscreen rumors have just made the issue worse with huge sales drop even during the holiday season.

Sony Ericsson runs into trouble with touchsceen issue on Aino

November 27th, 2009

se-aino

The Platstation compatible phone from Sony Ericsson, Aino has developed touchscreen issues (details sketchy) and is no longer on sale. Recently another SE model Satio featuring a 12MP camera was also delayed with some software bug. The company will surely take a setback on its plan to go profitable again, missing out big time on the holiday season sales with 2 of their recent releases not being on sale.

Sony Ericsson is certainly having a tough time and for some reason I always find their software buggy and slow, right from the T610 (which was a great phone in its time IMO) to the K750i / K850i that I used. Hope they get on the right track with better smartphone than just wow gadgets.

Gizmo Review: Sony Ericsson MH907 motion sensing earphones

November 27th, 2009

mh907-black

While Sony Ericsson has trimmed its Bluetooth offerings to have just 1 button control, the regular headset loses all buttons with the sensME technology that comes in the MH907. The centre of attraction for this device is the smart motion sensing controls that automatically pauses the music if you remove a earbud, and answers an incoming call automatically if you insert the earbud back in your ear. In case you are listening to music already or have the earbuds inserted, you just need to remove and reinsert any of the earbuds to answer the call (you can read all combinations here). The headset works by sensing (more…)

Sony Ercisson’s first Android aka Xperia X3 coming in Jan 2010?

September 18th, 2009

xperia x3

While SE confirmed the WM 6.5 based Xperia X2 recently putting the Android based Xperia rumors with a ‘?’, latest round of rumors suggest that the X3 would be outed in Jan 2010. This might be around the same time as the X2 hits the shelf’s.

Leaked shots of the X3 suggest that it would be a full touchscreen Android with no physical QWERTY (much like the Nokia X6). We have already seen a couple of leaked shots for the X3 along with rumored specs. With Android becoming a crowded space, Sony Ericsson would certainly like to come out with its own offering asap.

Sony Ericsson Xperia 2 now official: WM 6.5, Expensive!

September 6th, 2009

xperia x2

After several rumours swirling around the unannounced Xperia handsets, there is some confirmation from Sony Ericsson on the Xperia X2. This handset will launch with the upcoming Windows Mobile 6.5 and feature the same structure as the X1 (the shape however looks like the Nokia X6 with a slideout keyboard). The feature set is something standard for any good smartphone today, with 3.2″ touchscreen, AGPS / Google Maps, WiFi / Bluetooth, 8.1MP autofocus camera, accelerometer, TV-out and the like. The internal memory is disappointing at 110MB, making you rely on the Micro SDHC slot that can bring in another 16GB of space. The X2 will debut sometime in Q4 2009, and will go head-on with the Nokia X series and the Maemo-powered N900.

Probably the most “exciting” part is the US$1000 pricing that Sony Ericsson simply loves. Right from the P900 to the the Xperia X1, the one reason I never used couldn’t buy a Sony Ericsson is the handset exquisitely high pricing! We are still waiting for the X3, aka the “Rachel” powered by Android OS.

Running to losses and facing stiff competition from HTC, Apple, Nokia and others, Sony Ericsson better gets its calculations in the smartphone market right this time. Making a Windows Mobile phone (which fails to excite too many potential customers today) and pricing it at US$1000 when (more…)

Sony Ericsson’s slick new Xperia X5 concept

August 29th, 2009

xperia-x5

The tech world has just about started talking about Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X2 and Xperia X3 smartphones when SE introduces the Xperia X5 concept. The very cool-looking X5 design undoubtedly beats any gadget or concept in existence for a mobile phone.

This concept was created by a designer who calls himself Tob!s. Features of the beautiful Xperia X5 include a futuristic slide-out QWERTY keyboard, the Android OS, a 12 Mp camera, and HD video recording viewable on a 3.5″ touchscreen. When considering any Xperia successor a year from now, the features look quite obvious. The designer also created the phone in three different colors – Chrome Silver, Ocean Blue and Sunny Orange.

Tob!s (the designer) truly has kept the SE design and innovative style in mind while developing this concept. Anyways, for now keep an eager eye out for the Xperia X2 (expected to go live real soon).

Unofficial shot of Sony Ericsson Xperia 2 leaked?

June 6th, 2009

Xperia 1 has not been the best of devices and Windows Mobile certainly hasn’t helped Sony Ericsson do anything spectacular. Our friend @Farrhad using a Xperia X1 appears extremely frustrated with the slow and sticky OS. A leaked picture of the upcoming Xperia 2 has leaked online.

We already know that HTC is no longer building the Xperia series for SE, however the Xperia X2 design looks pretty similar to Xperia 1. The LCD is visibly bigger though (I guess this would be a capacitive one). Hope WM 6.5 comes in with some life for Sony Ericsson (yes this will run on Windows Mobile, the buttons on the leaked image confirms that), though I anxiously await the Android 2.0 powered SE smartphone.

Our New year wish comes true, Sony Ericsson adopts MicroSD

June 2nd, 2009

At last Sony Ericsson has got the wakeup call that we really wanted to see. After universally accepting MicroUSB as charging connector, all future SE cellphones would feature MicroSD card compatibility against the irritating :P M2 aka Memory Stick Micro.

This would give SE a big compatibility boost and make memory sticks much more affordable for Sony Ericsson users. Way to go SE, now lets have some cool Androids as well!

Sony Ericsson unveils PSP Phone (Well, Sort of!): Updated

May 30th, 2009

se_aino

Along with the 12 Mp Satio, Sony Ericsson unveiled the PS3 compatible Aino. Aino boasts of features like 3″ touchscreen, 8.1Mp camera, 3G and WiFi along with a PS3 compatibility. The PS3 compatibility would give the PS3 users a Remote Play feature which can sync all your PS3 images, audio and video with the Aino.

No, this phone cannot sync the HD games (which makes it a sort-of-PSP-phone). Aino can also sync all your media files from your computer using the SE’s Media Go multimedia manager. SE didn’t say anything about pulling your media through the 3G network. Aino is also compatible with PlayTV which lets users watch recorded TV content over the internet.

Other features include slideout numeric keypad, bluetooth, GPS, a charging base, wireless headsets and an 8GB SD card.

Aino will be available in two colours (Black and White) and is supposed to hit a “selected market” in Q4. No words on pricing yet.

Sony Ericsson’s patents the mood/expression based playlist creation

May 22nd, 2009

sony_ericsson_facial_expression_pmp_cellphone_patent

Sony Ericsson’s latest patent (Generating music playlist based on facial expression)  would build your playlist according to your mood. The camera attached to your phone would read your reaction to a particular song and build the playlist according to your moods and reactions. Once your playlist is being made and recognized by the phone, just smile and your phone would take care of the rest. How effective the application would be cannot be said right now. Here is a small abstract from the patent that shows how the system would work.

“FIG. 8 [shown above] is a diagram illustrating the concepts described herein. As illustrated, David is listening to a Bruce Springsteen song on a mobile phone that includes a DMP. David is in a very happy mood because he recently found out that he won the lottery. As David adjusts the volume of the DMP, camera 260 may capture an image of David’s face. Based on the captured image, FER component 420 may determine that the facial expression of David matches a category (e.g., a happy mood category) contained in category field 514 of FER database 500. Category field 514 may include a previously linked song associated with the happy mood category (e.g. a song by Metallica).”

So be angry, happy, sad, fearful or whtever your phone would take care of your music accordingly.
