One of the most acclaimed adventure games of all time, Riven: The Sequel to Myst, is now available for download for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users. The game had won widespread acclaim when it was released in 1997, a sequel to the highest selling adventure game of all time, Myst, and now is available for all iOS users. However, at over a gigabyte, it is SO hefty a download (we have been told that it is the first 1GB-plus game to be seen on the Apple App Store) that even the developers have advised caution on the iTunes page for the game, saying that they understand its a large application and being a gigabyte application will certainly take time to download and sync as well. They have requested the users to download the app on PC and then sync it with their iPhones. Last but not the least the team behind Riven have requested the users to be Patient.
Which, of course, raises the question as to whether the game is worth the $5.99 price tag slapped on it? As one who played the original Riven on the PC more than a decade ago, my answer is a resounding YES! It is quite simply one of the greatest adventure games of all time in which you end up on a strange land where something has gone wrong. There are clues and puzzles scattered all over the land and your job is to set things right, which involves a great deal of walking around and puzzle solving. The game featured spectacular visuals and wonderful music, and Cyan (its developers) seem to have recaptured it all on iOS. Yes, it is a hefty download but it is by far the best mobile adventure game you will ever find, and confirms our belief that the iOS devices are emerging as terrific gaming options for gamers on the move, notwithstanding all the opinions of the DS and PSP supporters.
