Two years and eleven months after the Apple App Store crossed the 1 Billion app download landmark back in April 2009; Apple has a few minutes ago gone past an astronomical 25 Billion app download mark!
While it took 9 months for the App Store to cross the 1 Billion download mark, the surge to 25 Billion wasn’t half as laborious. It was in January 2011 that Apple crossed yet another landmark figure of 10 Billion downloads. In just a year, the number of downloads increased by 15 billion to hit 25 Billion today. This is quite close to the figure of 12 Billion downloads a year we had talked about back in July 2011.
Like on previous occasions, this time too Apple is offering a $10k worth gift card to the lucky user who could have become the 25 Billionth App Downloader. It would take some time for Apple to come up with the winner though – thanks to the huge number of people downloading apps from the App Store at any given point of time.
The growth of the Apple App Store ever since its announcement and launch back in 2008 has been phenomenal. To date, Apple has paid out as much as $4 Billion in payouts to App Developers who have gone on to develop over 600,00 applications for the iOS platform.
With the craze for iDevices showing no sign of slowing down, it is expected that the Apple App Store would continue to rake in unbelievable numbers like these in the future as well.
UPDATE:
The lucky winner who gets the $10,000 iTunes® Gift Card is Chunli Fu of Qingdao, China for downloading the 25 billionth app which is “Where’s My Water?” for Free.
