Days after announcing and subsequently releasing the new iPhone models (and selling them in record numbers), Apple decided its time they give a fresh lease of life to its ageing iMac line-up. So what we now have today are two refreshed variants of the 21.5 inch and the 27 inch iMac with Intel’s new Haswell chips. Let’s dive straight into the brief specifications of the new iMacs.
To start with, the 21.5 inch entry level iMac gets a base version powered by a 2.7 GHz quad-core Core i5 CPU and the new Iris Pro graphics. Going up the price ladder will get you the same model with a more powerful, quad-core Core i5s CPU that clocks upto 3.4 GHz. Also added is the Nvidia GeForce 700 series graphics. If more performance is needed, there is the 3.5 GHz Core i7 option bundled with a GeForce GTX 780M graphics card. The 27 inch Mac too get the same processor options – but you do get the much bigger visual experience on the larger screened model!
The new iMac’s also support 802.11ac WiFi, and come with two Thunderbolt ports as well as four USB 3.0 ports. While 8 GB is the base installed RAM, consumers can add up to 32 GB of RAM should they have enough spare . You also get the option to put in a a 3 TB hard drive instead of the standard 1 TB capacity.
The 21-inch iMac starts at $1,299, while the 27-inch model starts at $1,799 and is already on sale at retail outlets and Apple’s own online store. In case you are not aware, the new iMacs will ship with Mac OS X Mountain Lion.
