Yes, you read that heading right. Square Enix, the company that is best known for its legendary Final Fantasy RPG series for the PlayStation console, is now attempting to do what no one has done so far – come up with a good cricket game for the iPhone and iPod touch. The game, titled Big Cup Cricket, is expected to be launched in the coming days. Bringing out the game will be Beautiful Game Studios, which is a part of Square Enix Europe, and is no mean player in the sports game department itself – they are the folks who gave us the utterly fantastic Championship Manager series of games that are considered by many (us included!) to be the final word in sports strategy gaming.
The only screenshot we have of the game seems to indicate something that is a trifle on the cartoonish side rather than a realistic representation of the sport, but the release assures us that this is a “fully functional” game of cricket. It seems to make the most of the iOS interface, letting you swipe and flick to control the direction and power of your shots, as well as deliveries and supports multiplayer mode as well as Apple’s Game Center. “It’s great to be able to bring out a casual cricket game like this around some of the major cricket tournaments,” said Roy Meredith, General Manager at Beautiful Game Studios.“We’re offering fans some great cricketing action with a value-for-money pick up and play the game, which is genuinely great fun.”
Well, the iPhone and iPod touch definitely lack a good cricket game at the moment, so we must confess to being very intrigued and interested, especially given the fact that the game is coming from the Square Enix-Beautiful Game Studios stable. More when we see and play the game. We are already committed to downloading it!
