At the WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) held by Apple yesterday, the company announced the much awaited iOS 6. For developers, Apple also started seeding the first iOS 6 Beta. This of course enabled a lucky few to be able to install iOS 6 on their devices and take a closer look at its new features.
One of the most important additions to iOS 6 was the native implementation of the new iOS Maps. The new software that would now come preloaded with all iOS devices with iOS 6 is here with a single aim in mind – to remove the dependence on Google Maps. It comes with a host of features including 3D Maps, real time traffic updates and of course, turn by turn navigation.
With the first of iOS 6 laden devices yet to make it out in the open, we were unsure if all these new features would be fully functional in faraway India. Answer came to us in the form of Twitter user @CloudJedi_ who has posted a screenshot of the iOS Maps in action. According to him turn by turn navigation seems to be working fine already. The real time traffic update is however not functional.
If you’re in a hurry to check out the iOS 6 in action, you would need an Apple Developer account. If you do not have one, the only option is to wait till fall when it would be officially released. As of now, it is being rumored that the Apple Maps application uses open StreetMaps and that they have collaborated with TomTom as well to provide the best navigation experience in the world.
Anyway, we hope Apple is ready with traffic updates as well when they finally launch iOS 6 later this year.
