Some recent reports have suggested that the Apple Macbook Air is no longer available at BestBuy. The status to order these Macbook Airs has been changed to ‘Not available’. Only the top-of-the-line model is currently being sold by them. This could be an indication towards the launch of a refreshed Macbook Air with the Sandy Bridge update and a Thunderbolt port. In the past, Apple had already brought similar additions to the iMacs and Macbook Pros. Now, it seems it is turn of the Macbook Air.
BestBuy doesn’t provide a date when they will be shipping these notebooks again. However, these things surely point out towards the possibility of a refresh. Amazon has also reported that they are running low on the Macbook Air stock. There has also been a report about Apple “Holding back” the launch of the MacBook Air till the latest version of OSX; Mac OSX Lion is released in July.
Note that the MacBook Air is still available through other online stores and even from the Apple Store. None of these sources have until now dropped a hint about a possible update. Back in May, 9to5Mac, had reported that supplies of the Macbook Air are so constrained that they have to focus on the remaining inventory of their physical retail stores. When you add all these up, it seems the MacBook Air is surely headed for an update in the next few weeks. There has also been a talk about a Black MacBook Air as well as a 15 inch version in the not too distant past. It would be fascinating to see if Apple actually ends up making these iterations.
As for Mac OS X Lion, it will be available in July through the Mac App Store at a price tag of $29.99.
