There were talks of it becoming legal to port Siri to any of the iOS5 devices after a new update is made available. But now it has emerged that a similar solution has already been made available by the joint efforts of iOS hackers Grant Paul, Ryan Petrich and Steven Troughton-Smith.
The three of them have come together to form a new installer named Spire, though this obviously works on the jailbroken iOS5 devices only for now. Till date the voice assistant has been made available by Apple only on the iPhone 4S. And though there have been instances wherein hackers were able to port Siri to other iOS devices, those were illegal and infringed on Apple’s copyrights.
Its being claimed that the Spire installer is legal and it doesn’t infringe on any rights. Once Spire is installed it will initiate a 100 MB download of Siri from the Apple servers directly, though the trick is that you would still need info from an iPhone 4S to set up your own proxy server, which will help establish the connection between Apple’s backend and your iOS 5 device.
For people who can’t wait to get their hands on the Spire installer, its available on Cydia now. Interestingly Troughton-Smith added that they are waiting for the iPhone 4S to be jailbroken as that would allow them to totally avoid the proxy server issues and set up on any jailbroken iOS devices without the need of any information from an iPhone 4S.
