On the 6th Day of the Apple vs Samsung courtroom trial, Apple’s legal team reiterated that Samsung has copied the iPhone with a 132 page document that reveals, to what extent was the South Korean giant ‘inspired’ with Apple’s product. The document was submitted as evidence in the court, on the fifth day of the courtroom trial.
The internal document of Samsung, translated from Korean, is a “relative evaluation report” published in March 2010, that evaluates how Samsung Galaxy S1 phone stacks up against Apple’s iPhone.
The document, authored by Samsung’s product engineering team, evaluates everything feature by feature, from the home screen to the browser to the built-in apps on both devices. At the end of every evaluation, there is a ‘Directions for Improvement’ box, that stated additions of features or details and subtraction of the same, to put Samsung’s phones in the league of iPhone. From the look of it, the evaluation report worked as a guide on ‘How to mimic Apple’s user experience’ for Samsung.
In its defence, Samsung issued a statement, calling the document a “typical competitive analysis,” something “routinely” performed by companies across many industries. The company said, “Samsung benchmarks many peer companies. In fact, these are typical competitive analyses routinely undertaken by many companies in many industries – including Apple.”
According to the report, Samsung fell short against many basic functions such as efficient and effective use of the screen space and visual interaction effects such as saving mail and screen transitions, in comparison to iPhone. Other categories where the ‘world’s number one’ phone manufacturer reported deficiencies were browsing, messaging and multimedia.
