The New iPad is not only selling like hot cakes, it is in fact, literally hot at 97 degrees Fahrenheit. The device is actually warmer than previous generation iPad by almost 16 degrees. Reports suggests that, the A5X chip in the New iPad maybe the reason behind the increase in temperature.
Repair Labs conducted a series of experiments, where in they pitted both, the previous generation iPad and the New iPad against each other in order to compare the output of heat generated by the two devices. The experiment concluded that the A5X chip on the New iPad registered a temperature of 96.8 degrees Fahrenheit, while the A5 chip on the iPad 2 showed a reading of 80.6 degrees Fahrenheit.
The temperatures registered in both the devices were that of the chips. One of the conclusions suggested that, the materials in the chips, might be the reason between the difference in the temperature of the chips. The A5 chip is believed to be ceramic, while the A5X chip seems to be metallic.
The experiment was conducted, to verify, the claims that were made over the past weekend, that the New iPad was becoming physically hot to the touch during use, specifically in the lower left hand corner. Although, the experiment was unable to confirm the claim made by Consumer Report, that the device could heat up to 112 degrees Fahrenheit.
On Tuesday, Apple responded to these claims with the statement that says, “The new iPad delivers a stunning Retina display, A5X chip, support for 4G LTE plus 10 hours of battery life, all while operating well within our thermal specifications. If customers have any concerns they should contact Apple Care”, reports Huffingtonpost.
